الإستدلال الإستقرائى التجريبى

فى منهج الفلسفة لسنة أولى ثانوى بمصر يتعلم التلاميذ – كالعادة – كراهية الدروس والمواد التى يدرسونها. طبعا هذا الكلام ينطبق على السنوات الأخرى أيضا ولكنى وجدت هذه العناوين فى هذا المنهج الغير مفهوم لدى تلميذ جميل اسمه نادر

يعنى مش كفاية صعوبة الحياة على التلاميذ… لأ كمان لازم يعقدوها لهم. أنا مش فاهمة حاجة من هذا الكلام وعندما قام تلمبذ بسؤال الأستاذ قال له: إسكت هو إنت هتتفلسف؟

يعنى إذا الفلسفة شىء مش كويس – مش كده وإلا ايه؟ الطفل لازم يتعلم الفلسفة لكن مش لازم يتفلسف

بالذمة ما هى فائدة أن أعقد التلميذ بالجملة التالية؟ إسمعوا يا ناس ما قرأه على نادر:

أفلاطون قال إن الشىء هو نفسه أو هو ذاته. الإنسان هو الإنسان – سقراط هو سقراط ويرمز له بألف هو ألف.وهو يؤكد وحود علاقة مساواة بين طرفين متكافئين ومخالفة هذا القانون تؤدى إلى الوقوع فى تناقض وفساد الإستدلال

ثم يقولون إن التلاميذ لا تريد أن تتعلم. لكن طبعا هذا الكلام يعتبر إستدلال إستقرائى تحريبى بالنسبة لكاتبى تلك المناهج العظيمة. هما بيخرجوا بتوع المناهج دول من فين؟ من السجون علشان يعذبوا التلاميذ؟

معلهش يا نادر – ذاكر يا بنى يمكن الإستقراء التجريبى ينفعك فى يوم من الأيام

So the Ace of Spades is dead. He has been hanged on the first day of the Muslim Eid. I have no objecftion to the death of a brutal dictator. My opinions regarding capital punishment matter very little too.

But besides the many questions that this raises, I have two specific innocent ones:

1. Why was he exectued with such speed? What were they afraid he would uncover?
2. Has anyone heard of the Hague? Isn’t that where war criminals go to be tried? Why wasn’t Hussein tried in the Hague to ensure a just trial?

dead people walking – موتى يمشون

Cairo broke my heart. It is a beautiful old city and I used to love going about Cairo’s crowded streets and especially walking by the Nile. I used to see the Nile as the blood vein of an old old man.. giving him life and energy, supplying him with an unbreakable life-line.

This time I was completely shocked at the city. It seems to be a city that has died. Age is not faring well with it. It is a dead city. Over-crowded, over-polluted, over-depressed. Poeple seem so extremely depressed, so unhappy and unsatisifed, it is difficult to let it go unnoticed.

I finally found one taxi driver who was singing. He actually had a good voice, singing some happy old songs. I asked him how he, of all the people I met, was singing, and he said that the more the pressure and depression, the more he sings. Even he was depressed.

What happened to Cairo?

Alexandria was different. I was truly pleased to see the same old places with the same old names.. Trianon, Delices, Elite, Cecile… all the old places maintaining their beauty and aging well, but aging nevertheless. It is a less crowded city in winter. People are still walking and smiling and happy.

But Cairo is a dead city now. The old, wise man has died… and the people.. they are dead people walking, barely maintaining their livelihoods… barely surviving.

I now mourn for that beautiful old man… I mourn the death of Cairo.

الفارق كبير بين مصر والإسكندرية. تبدو لى القاهرة وكأنها رجل عجوز توفى من ثقل الحمل الذى يحمله. الإسكندرية كانت أكثر حمالا, لا تزال محتفظة بكل ما هو جميل وقديم. أما القاهرة فرأيت الناس فيها فى حالة من الإكتئاب العام مرسومة على الوجوه فى كل مكان فى أى شارع من شوارعها.

وجدت سائق تاكسى يغنى ففرحت به وسألته كيف هو وحده الذى يغنى, فقال لى أنه كلما كثر وكبر الهم كلما غنى أكثر. أى أنه هو أيضا مكتئب وهو أيضا حزين

ماذا حدث للقاهرة؟ لماذا أصبحت مدينة ميتة؟ حسرتى عليكى يا قاهرة

فيما يبدو أن الإخوة من الإخوان المسلمين فى البرلمان المصرى لم يعد يشغلهم سوى الأمور السطحية المعتادة , فبدلا من التقدم بحلول حقيقية حتى يثبتوا قدرتهم على الحكم الذى يسعون إليه, كشفوا أنفسهم منذ دخولهم البرلمان وفوزهم ب88 مقعدا. فهؤلاء – والكلام لروز اليوسف, تقدموا بطلبات إحاطة وطلبات عاجلة للبرلمان حول أمور تستحق وقفة حقيقية – فهى تعطينا نموذجا جيدا لما ينتظرنا من الدولة الدينية ومن الإخوان بشكل خاص  إذا ما وصلوا للحكم بالفعل. فمن بين طلباتهم الكثيرة الغريبة كان طلبا بمنع العروسة باربى لأنها تثير الغرائز وطلب آخر بسرعة عمل الفياجرا المصرية حتى يستطيعون ممارسة حقوقهم الزوجية بشكل كامل 

لو هى دى مشاكل الأمة – فلك الله يا أمة ولك الله يا مصر

The Muslim Brotherhood are using their time pretty interestingly as members of the Egyptian parliament after winning an unprecedented 88 seats. It seems that instead of using this opportunity to prove their capabities as potential seekers of power, they are making use of it in other interesting ways. I think it is good. It tends to expose them and show what they are planning for Egypt should they ever get to power, God forbid!

Among their concerns are several requests they made in parliament including the banning of Barbie doll because it incites basic instincts, and also – listen to this – speeding up the manufacturing of the Egyptian viagra in order to ‘regain their capability to perform their husbandly duties.’

I think they have been getting too much viagra spam emails!!

Well.. if these are their concerns and this is what they are preoccupied with and those are their solutions to problems, then God have mercy on us and God have mercy on Egypt!

the big parking lot – موقف كبير للسيارات

A government statistic in Egypt says that cars in Cairo move at an average speed of 11 kms/hr. It also says that by the year 2008, the average will be 8 kms/hr. This means that Cairo is increasingly becoming a huge parking lot [in fact, it IS a huge parking lot].

How does one function or go to work or move from one place to another? Is this the result of over-population? or of an over-car-ed society? or lack of urban planning? or corruption that caused the lack of urban planning? or is it a combination of both? or a combination of everything? and whenever there is a problem, we build a bridge, or a tunnel – immediate resolutions that ignore longer term resolutions. Just build tunnel after tunnel.

Whatever the reasons may be, Cairo, the city that never sleeps, is now also the city that never moves.

Productivity? what productivity?

فى برنامح 90 دقيقة مع معتز الدمرداش, قال معتز أن هناك إحصائية حكومية تقول أن سرعة السيارات فى مصر الآن حوالى 11 كيلو متر فى الساعة, وأنه فى عام 2008 سوف تصبح السرعة 8 كيلو فى الساعة, مما يعنى أن القاهرة ستصبح موقفا كبيرا للسيارات. هى ظبعا مش لسه هتصبح – هى بالفعل أصبحت موقفا كبيرا للسيارات

يا ترى السبب فى زيادى السكان؟ أم السبب فى زيادة عدد السيارات؟ أم سوء التخطيط؟ أم الفساد الذى أدى لسوء التخطيط؟ أم السبب هو خليط من كل هذه الأشياء معا؟ وكل ما نتزنق, نعمل نفق أو نعمل كوبرى فهى كلها حلول آنية مؤقتة لا تحل شىء على المدى الظويل. كل ما نتزنق نبنى نفق

النتيجة هى هى – القاهرة التى كانت تعرف بأنها المدينة التى لا تنام أصبحت المدينة التى لا تتحرك. هى لا تنام أيضا, ولكنها لا تتحرك. محلك سر

إنتاجية؟ عن أية إنتاجية نتحدث؟

 

الأمراض النفسية فى المدونات العربية

فوجئت فى الحقيقة عندما قرأت بعض المدونات العربية, والمصرية منها بشكل خاص, ووجدت من يكتب بإستباحة أعراض الناس والهجوم عليهم بدون سبب مقنع. فهناك من قرر “الدفاع عن نفسه” وبدأ فى شتم مدون شهير وزوجته ووضع صورهم فى المدونة وهو يقول أنه لا يعلم فى الواقع لو كانت رفيقته أم مراته, ويقول تعليقا على صورة لهما على شاطىء البحر أنه ها هو بيفرج الناس على رجليها. ثم مدونة أخرى تكتبها شابة لتروى أفكارها وأحلامها وذاتها, ونجد المرضى النفسيين الذين يكتبون ردودا وتعليقات عليها فيكيلون لها بأقذع الشتائم والألفاظ .. وهى كلها, كما قالت هى فى مدونتها أنه بمثابة التحرش الجنسى ولكنه عبر المدونات هذه المرة

وغيرها الكثير من المدونات والتعليقات عليها . وأود أن أقول بادىء ذى بدء أن التعليقات الجارحة ليست بالشىء الغريب على الإنترنت بشكل عام, ولكن الملاحظ فى الشتائم والبذاءات فى المدونات العربية بشكل عام تتخذ أشكال التحرش بالفعل, وبخاصة فى مسألة المرأة, وكأن الشارع المصرى الذى تعرف كل امرأة مشت فيه سواء كانت محجبة أم لا, هو مرتع للتحرش الجنسى بالكلام أو بالملامسة, فكأن هذا الشارع قد إنتقل إلى المدونات بكل ما فيه من بذاءات

ومن بين التعليقات التى قيلت فى مدونة الشابة التى ذكرتها من قبل وهو تعليق أقرأهه بشكل دائم هو أننا نحاول التشبه بالغرب فى كل شىء. واللطيف أن من يكتبون هذا سيتخدمون الإنترنت وهو غربى المصدر, ويستخدمون المدونات وهى غربية المصدر أيضا.

وبدلا من الإلتفات لحال الأمة الذى لا يعجب عدو ولا حبيب, وبدلا من الإلتفات إلى العدو الخارجى الحقيقى المتربص بنا جميعا, نرى من يستخدم تلك المدونات – الغربية الصنع والفكرة – فى الهجوم على أبناء بلدهم وفى التجريح وفى البذاءات, فما بين الهجوم على المرأة للهجوم على “التنصير” وتتبع قصص القساوسة الذين إما أسلموا أو أصبحوا منعدمى الضمير, وحتى مهاجمة الليبراليين والتقدميين إلخ. فكل شىء مباح, أما العمل من أجل النهوض بالأمة أو العمل من أجل ردع العدو الخارجى فهذا شىء بعيد تماما عنهم, فأنصاف المثقفين وأنصاف المتعلمين هؤلاء يصنعون طواحين هواء يحاربونها, وهم بهذا لا يدرون أنهم يحاربون أنفسهم أيضا.

واضح أن التعليم لا يصنع الثقافة ولا يصنع قيم الحوار والنقاش والإختلاف فى الرأى وواصح أيضا أننا نقلنا أمراضنا المجتمعية النفسية إلى التقنيات الحديثة, فهى لم تؤثر فينا بل نحن الآن نؤثر فيها ونسخدمها كأدوات جديدة حديثة لتخريب ما بقى من حداثة وتقدم فى مجتمعاتنا.

So much for airplane security! 80 mice were running all over a Saudi plane, and some mice even fell on passengers’ heads. The incident occurred on a Saudi Arabian Airlines flight from the capital, Riyadh, to north-eastern town of Tabuk [link]. Apparently the mice escpaed from a passenger’s bag.

Now how on earth did that passenger ’sneak in’ 80 mice in a bag????

No explanation provided.

forgive not their trespasses…

She may have trespassed on sacred UN ground. She may have been doing a ‘publicity stunt’ as Peggy Kerry, John Kerry’s sister, who works as mission’s liaison for non-governmental organizations claimed, after refusing to accept her petition. She may have done worse. But convicting peace activist and bereaved mother of a murdered American soldier in Iraq, Cindy Sheehan, of trespassing and sentencing her to conditional discharge is nothing short of an outrage [link].

Not because I am defending rowdy behaviour [if this is considered so]; nor am I defending disobedience to the sacred police [if she really did that].

No. Not for any of those reasons. But to let the ‘big ones’ who trespassed on Iraq, the big ones who trespass on Palestinian land every minute of the day; the big ones who over-charged the government for services provided to the troops and who pocketed more money through this war than their coffers could handle; the big ones who trespass on our privacy through surveillance; the big ones who trespass on our civil rights – to let those big ones off the hook and yet convict a simple heartbroken mother because she is doing what she can to ease the pain of losing her son… is nothing short of an outrage.

It reminds me of a poor Egyptian woman a few years back. She worked as a street vendor, selling her vegetables for one piastre above regulated market price. She was arrested and jailed for over-charging consumers. As for all the corrupt Fat Cats who pilaged and plundered the economy, they were let loose to wallow in their corruption.

It is sickening!!

May God bless Cindy Sheehan and all the mothers who have lost sons and daughters in this illegal and immoral war.

supremacy over all others

Against such threats as these, no nation can make itself secure by seeking supremacy over all others. We all share responsibility for each other’s security, and only by working to make each other secure can we hope to achieve lasting security for ourselves.

That was Kofi Anan’s farewell speech as United Nations Secretary General and which he delivered at the Truman Presidential Museum and Library in Independence, Missouri today [read full text of speech]. Anan urged the United States not to abandon its Democratic ideals while waging war against terrorism because it is a moral duty and obligation.

Annan clearly had nothing to lose and so he laid it all out in the open. He spoke of five powerful lessons he said he learnt from Harry Truman’s presidency, that “brings [him] to the conclusion that such leadership is no less sorely needed now than it was 60 years ago” – an obvious dig at the current Bush and his administration. Here are his five inter-linked lessons:

1. In today’s world, the security of every one of us is linked to that of everyone else.
2. We are not only all responsible for each other’s security. We are also, in some measure, responsible for each other’s welfare.
3. Both security and development ultimately depend on respect for human rights and the rule of law.
4. Governments must be accountable for their actions in the international arena, as well as in the domestic one.
5. We can only do all these things by working together through a multilateral system, and by making the best possible use of the unique instrument bequeathed to us by Harry Truman and his contemporaries, namely the United Nations. In fact, it is only through multilateral institutions that states can hold each other to account. And that makes it very important to organize those institutions in a fair and democratic way, giving the poor and the weak some influence over the actions of the rich and the strong.

To be mighty and powerful comes with a responsibility. While ‘might’, in essence, ‘makes right’, it also makes for ‘unethical and immoral’ behaviour. Such behaviour undermines the ‘might’, and we can all too well see the diminishing influence of the US, in spite of all its might, in the Middle East, and the rise of Iranian influence in spite of every effort to curb it.

But will anyone listen, or are we still ’staying the course’ until we go over the edge of the cliff?

Or are we already long past the edge?

welcome the blitcons’ fiction – exit the real world

Ziauddin Sardar, commissioner of the Commission for Equality and Human Rights, wrote an article in The New Statesman [reprinted in summary in The Guardian of London [link]] about those he calls the Blitcons – the British Literary Neocons, pushing their global political agendas and using their fame and literary status to do so. In particular, he mentions three prominent fiction writers who also write op-eds and columns in the media, namely Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie and Ian McEwan.

Sardar’s excellent article details what he calls three ‘one-dimensional conceits’ the Blitcons share:

1. the absolute supremacy of American culture. Blitcon fiction is orientalism for the 21st century, shifting the emphasis from the supremacy of the west in general to the supremacy of American ideas of freedom.
2. that Islam is the greatest threat to this idea of civilisation.
3. that American ideas of freedom and democracy are not only right, but should be imposed on the rest of the world.

He concludes his article with a most revealing paragraph – how paranoia and hatred reaches out to similar paranoia and hatred and are enjoined in this tango dance of death:

The real world is not a fiction. The ideology of mass murder has a history and a context in all its perversity and evil. But the wild imaginings of the Blitcons are not an appropriate guide to the eradication of this horror. Turned to this end, the manipulative power of literary imagination is nothing but spin. And such spin is simply hatred answering, mirroring and matching hatred. Like minds reach across intervening swaths of the world and, in their hatred, embrace each other. That is all Blitcons tell us. But it is hardly enlightening for those of us desperate to find a sustainable path from destruction and slaughter.
